Wombat Gates

We have a large chook yard that wombats seem determined to enter. We have now for a number of years been trying to keep them out, not because we dont want the wombats in but because the chooks get out through the holes the wombats made and because we have a couple of terrier dogs that would use the holes to get in and so we assume would foxes. We tried to block the holes with rocks, log and even railway sleepers. Although the railway sleepers were sometimes successful we always ended up with large wholes dug beside them. We then tried deterents such as blood and bone and naptha. The Blood and bone was dug up the next night. The naptha lasted about a week before it was dug up. We had thought of wombat gates but assumed that if they worked for the wombats they would work for the dogs and foxes. Then we tried something new. A wombat gate made from the heavy metal plates used to tie railway tracks to sleepers. We obtained some from a demolition yard. They seem to be working well so far. We have had them in over a year now and so far have had no new digging around the yard. The plates seem to be too heavy for the dogs to show any interest in trying to push through but dont appear to be bothing the wombats. We dont know if we are speaking too early but hopefully we have found a solution to the problem

They appear to be working very well. We have had no new tracks under the fences and the wallaby invasion into the garden has reduced considerably.
