Wombat cull Empty Wombat cull

Post  JohnM Mon Jan 26, 2009 3:06 pm

Have just read the Society latest update on the culling of Wombats. It makes one wonder where the interests of National Parks lay. As a carer of native wildlife, most contact I have had with them, never resulted in enthuiastic responses, particularly when requesting some kind of assistance from their staff, when a difficult rescue required more than one person in attendance. E.G. Called to four adult wombats fallen into underground pump house on a winery. They were 3 metres down a small ladder, in a confined space amongst pump and piping equipment, with s small access hole through the roof that someone had left the hatch door off. The temperature in the space was extreme. Only after constant badgering did a ranger attend and assist me in the capture and removal on the animals. Anyone experienced in trying to assist adult wombats will appreciate the difficulty in this situation. A few bruises were inflicted by the animals on the rescuers.
Listed in the latest update were some known methods that occur in illegal culling of our beautiful animals.
In my local area it is a fact ripping of both rabbit and wombat burrows occurs. Here is the latest method - Do what the automatic teller machine bandits do - Place a length of PVC piping down the burrow and attach either a LP gas or acetylene cylinder to the pipe and fill the burrow with gas. Remove the cylinder and trickle some petrol down the tube and on the ground to a safe distance from the burrow. Ignition of the petrol trail causes a large explosion within the burrow. Disgusting, abhorent? Yes. Does it happen, YES.

What??????????????

I'm totally and utterly flabbergasted about what you've said about the latest way of destroying wombat burrows - I've never heard of it. That is - as you say - abhorent.

Do you know where this has happened? I live in the Central West too, so I'm gathering it's happening around my home town. Do you know who advises this technique? Does NPWS know about it?

John, I am a Regional Councillor for the Wildlife Preservation Society of Australia and would very much like to look into this issue on behalf of the society. I'm sure that the society would like to know about this issue and act on it - in fact, I think that the two WPSA societies (Wildlife Preservation and Wombat Protection) may be able to join forces here. If you could PM me with some more information it would be much appreciated.

Thanks John.

Cheers

Wombat cull Empty Harming wombats

Post  Amanda Cox Thu Jan 29, 2009 9:47 am

As Public Officer for the Wombat Protection Society it distresses me to hear so frequently of the perverted ,sick and inhumane treatment that wombats receive at the hands of humans. What is particularly frustrating is that many reporters will tell us where and who does these atrocious things but can't or won't report them. Unfortunately it is "heresay" if we report on behalf of someone so we are limited in how to respond. Some time back the Society approved that we write to anyone reported and if nothing more, let them know that they have been "outed". This has had mixed responses from those written to, from ignoring such letters or contacting to say they aren't doing anything. Local publicity is sometimes useful but we hesitate at times to describe some acts of cruelty both because it is distressing to some caring people who hear of it and because it can give the real idiots ideas. We have established that the R.S.P.C.A. is bound by legislation to investigate animal cruelty whether it involves domestic or native animals even though N.PW.S. in N.S.W. is mandated under the ACT to do so as well.

Wombat cull Empty Harming Wombats

I'm totally flabbergasted and just don't understand how people can be so cruel.
I wish I could suggest an answer in catching these idiots out. Unfortunately, we are all bound to our great legal system and have to follow the correct procedures. This should be reported to NPWS and RSPCA.

Hi Linda, I have today, via email, forwarded to you further information on the original post re exploding burrows. Some I would prefer not to have on a public forum, as it may give the wrong people some new ideas.
A site www.rodenator.com/ shows a product that would do a similar job to what I described.
Also some interesting reading re standards for blasting rabbit warrens and if you should accidently injure native animals, go to www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity/invasive/publications/pubs/rab007-rabbit-warren-destruction-explosives.pdf
Cheers. JM

Hello JohnM

I do apologise for the lengthy delay in writing back to you about the wombat deaths. I did try to follow it up by contacting the Wildlife Preservation Society of Australia and NPWS. WPSA also wrote to NPWS and we were told that it was too hard to follow up on such breaches of native animal protection. I was really dismayed that NPWS seemed to have no interest at all to follow up on such a cruel practise. But unfortunately, it would seem that the protection of our native animals has little meaning to the very authority meant to protect them.

I'm so sorry that I couldn't help more.
